Are orders and decorations considered numismatic items? The answer to this question is ‘no’, but the connection between phaleristics, the scientific term for the study of orders, and numismatics is so strong that we regularly offer orders, decorations and medals of merit for auction.
The word ‘medal’ in ‘medal of merit’ already hints at the connection, as the way they were made and minted was very similar to how coins and commemorative medals were made. The spiritual and secular orders of knighthood in the Middle Ages are seen as the predecessors of today’s orders of merit. Orders were initially seen as a sign of allegiance to a particular association or showed loyalty to a sovereign. Later, they were increasingly used to honour civil and military achievements, donated by rulers, states and also private institutions.
Order chains, breast stars and jewels are often graceful pieces of jewellery and are considered small works of art. Recognising the quality and uniqueness of some pieces requires a high level of expertise. In this field, we are supported by an expert who can look back on many years of scientific and commercial experience.
